Open Question: GrandView/ Great Lakes Window Reviews?
I had a contractor out to the house to give me an estimate this afternoon and I said that I wouldn’t mind dropping money on Pella or Anderson windows so we know we got something good. He, instead, suggested Grand View (which is a subsidiary of Great Lakes, I think) windows because they were much better quality for not all that much more. I have never heard of them and know nothing of their products and I can’t find reviews online, so I was wondering if somebody out there had had these windows put in and what they thought of them? Any contractors had any experience? Thanks!
Open Question: Chapter 1 – thoughts?
Any feedback welcome at all!
Once, there lived a little girl, in a little house, on the edges of a great city. The house stood in a long street of identical houses, one of many identical rows spiralling out into the surrounding countryside. There was nothing special about the house, or the city. Many people lived in many houses, in many cities, just like them across the world.
The girl, however, this one little girl, she was very special. She had a secret which needed to kept hidden at all cost. For if the secret every got out…well, who knew what would happen?
But the girl was careless. She did not keep her secret well and it escaped. The people in the houses around her became afraid.
There was no other choice, her father told her. They had to leave. So they went North. Far North, where the edges of the land bled into the sea.
And there, they began again.
—————————————————————————-
The drive up to the big house was the worst part of his job. It seemed to take so long to reach from the main road. Inching his way along the cracked, gray driveway, under dark, overbearing trees that scraped the top of his white van always made his pulse quicken and his back retreat further into the seat, as though trying to hide from whatever gathered in this dark trees. And at the end of it all, that strange, bandaged figure in the doorway, never speaking, just accepting the groceries with a nod and what might be a smile underneath her cotton wrappings. And that dog, lurking in the hallway, growling softly as if to let you know he was ready to spring for your throat at the slightest hint of trouble.
At least, this is what I like to imagine the driver thinks. Every week I watch the van’s slow progress to the front door, imagining horror and discomfort in his mind. Perhaps he loves it. He might enjoy the view, maybe, or the silence and peace the after noise of the motorway. Maybe the way the sunlight flashes silver on the sea or the way, if the light is just right, the white walls of the house glow against the darkness of the surrounding hills. My home can certainly look beautiful when it has a mind to.
Perhaps he doesn’t think at all. Maybe we are just another job to be crossed off his list.
Thursday mornings are always the worst for me. It’s the only time of the week I’m not completely free and so, I suppose, I resent it.
It’s not that I don’t try to fill the many hours of my week. It’s just that, well, thinking about it too much is a little…overwhelming. For someone in my situation, I think it best to live from day to day. Moment to moment. Don’t think too far ahead, or the weight of all the years ahead of me in this house…crushing.
Now though, stood at the window, waiting, my head is filled with ideas on how to spend the rest of my morning. Buck, picking up on my tension, is practically turning somersaults in the hallway below. He stops, races to the top of the stairs, sniffs my feet, then races back to the bottom, his claws clipping on the wooden steps. He moves to quickly I fear he’ll fall snout over tail to the bottom.
The van is one minute away. I check my reflection in the mirror at the bottom of the stairs, looking to see everything is in place. Good thing too. One of my bandages has worked its way loose, revealing the nothingness underneath. I doubt he’d notice anything was amiss in the few moments it takes for him to put the bags inside the front door and for me to sign the receipt. Still, I must be careful.
Sometimes, I wonder if it wouldn’t be so bad. I feel a reckless curiosity about what his reaction would be. How his face would look if he saw…
But then, I remember the last time I was careless…
———————————————–
The shopping packed away, I race with Buck through the empty house. My feet slip for a second on the living room rug and I feel a shudder of unbalance before I right myself. Maybe that one should go too, too dangerous.
We continue over the lawn, past the waterfall. Buck splashes through the shallows of the lake, staining his grey fur with streaks of rust. He plunges his way along the stream, fearlessly disappearing into the rocky tunnel. I, following the lip of the gorge above him, experience several breathless moments until I see him emerge on the shore.
He half turns towards me, still running in a lolloping fashion towards the sea. Once he has made sure I’m still following he breaks into his full-speed, far outstripping me. He knows where we’re headed as well as I do.
By the time I reach him at our special place, his paw-prints criss-crossing the sand show he has explored and found nothing of interest since last time.
Kneeling in the sand, I pull out the egg box. Seven eggs. Six painted gold, one the colour of lead. I paint them myself. Every Thursday morning after Rachel leaves for work. I started the ritual the day of my father’s funeral. Of course, I didn’t go. I st
Oh it cut the end off..here’s the rest
I stayed here and mourned in my own way.
It’s only worked once, but it brought me Rachel. She doesn’t know about this ritual. I fear she’d be offended if she knew I made requests to the sea. Even though it brought me her, I can’t help asking for more.
Slowly, I lay the eggs in a circle in the sand, the lead one in the middle. Moving clockwise, I throw each one out to sea, whispering my wish to each one before I let it go. The lead one I throw last. I ask nothing of this egg, but this is the one that matters most. It travels furthest, despite the extra weight I imagine it carries.
It may have been my imagination, but I think they form a ring of gold out at sea. A ring of gold with a lead heart.
Perhaps this time.
Voting Question: I want to live in a nice small town in Tennessee?any ideas?
any nice small towns in Tennessee. where the view is great. and its very SOUTHERN. where there’s a ton of land and beautiful scenery. and a small town where everyone is kinda like family. and where you can just play music on the front porch till midnight. i want a good place to raise my son. hes not born yet but the time i find a place, and house and everything. he will be a little baby. probably between 4-7 months the time we move. i want a nice place to raise him. where he can appreciate the little things in life. where he can ride horses and always feel free. I don’t want him to live so materialistic. i live in williamsburg va now. and the kids at my church are just so lazy. on beautiful day when its not cold and not hot just around the 60’s and the suns out. they just sit on the floor for hours playing psp and nintendo ds that’s not what i want for my child. i want him to appreciate life like i do. and grow up around horses and chickens and cows lol. and enjoy the beautiful things that make up life. i will still let him watch television and go on the computer. but you know what i mean. i used to live in town where we would play outside everyday. and run around town and making up our own games. and swimming in rivers and lakes. and we loved to ride ponies and horses. but ofcourse that place has changed since i was 5 and they put up all these malls and devolopments. besides it had no beautiful scenery
